I’m Mark Alton and I’m a father of 3. I’ve worked in construction for 25 years and I became an expert in loss through my addictive behaviors. Matthew and I developed this course because we both had lifestyle struggles which let to addictions and addictive behaviors. People who don’t have addictions
generally think an addiction is more of a choice than a defined medical condition. We are not medical professions but we know the struggles are real and we know the shame we felt when we couldn’t control our habits. This let to dishonesty and troubles at home and at work. When I started to want to make changes in my life I slowly began to understand what worked for me on a consistent basis. I had to understand what was happening, then I had to admit to myself it was happening to me. I understood it is essential to put in effort in to reverse the effects of decades of shame about myself. The knowledge and the tools in the course, including the habit tracker are what gave me the ability to change my path, creating a more healthy and productive lifestyle. I can say with confidence it feels great to be on this side of shame.
I am a father of three young children. I have been working in the construction industry for 20 plus years. Mark and I developed this course together as we shared many of the same lifestyle struggles and impacts in our lives due to our addictive behaviors. While my addiction was active, I lost a lot of meaningful relationships, not just my family relationships, but friends and work colleges. All because of my addictive behaviors. I suffered in silence as the people around me would speak negatively about our colleges whose addictions where easier to point out than mine, yet they would never address their thoughts with that person. All the while these conversations about me were happening when I wasn’t around. None of these people knew how to approach someone with addictions or speak to me about my behavior. When I finally decided to make changes in my behavior, I realized that it all started because I wanted it to change. I then knew that no matter what anyone would have said to me in the past I wasn’t ready to make changes until the day I decided to be honest with myself. I wasn’t a medical professional, but I did know what techniques and literature that I was reading worked for me. As I further began to understand what was happening to my brain and body it helped me make better decisions that helped form more positive behaviors. For me, understanding what me addictions were doing to me on a mental and physical level allowed me to make better choices to help me live a healthier lifestyle.

We wanted freedom and privacy while taking control of our bad habits, but did not want to sacrifice support or guidance.
